Your legal residence also matters. Apply through the embassy or eVisa portal responsible for your country of residence. For Indian passport holders, the standard option is a 30-day single-entry eVisa costing $25 (~₹2,100) or a 90-day multiple-entry eVisa costing $50 (~₹4,200), with processing taking 3–7 working days. No interview and no biometrics. Visa-required nationalities need an eVisa, Visa on Arrival, or an embassy visa.

How it works

How to apply for a Vietnam visa

The official route, step by step.

  1. Confirm you need a visa

Check the Vietnam visa-exemption list for your nationality. If you're exempt, you don't need this process.

  2. Choose your visa type

The 30-day single-entry covers most leisure trips. The 90-day multiple-entry suits travelers combining Vietnam with Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand on one trip.

  3. Prepare your documents

see the checklist in Required documents for a Vietnam eVisa above. You need a clear color scan of your passport bio page and a passport-size photograph.

  4. Submit your application

online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. Create an account, upload documents, pay by card, and receive the eVisa by email.

  5. Receive your eVisa

the eVisa arrives as a PDF by email. Print a copy and carry it with your passport. The visa is linked to your passport number electronically — the immigration officer will verify it on arrival.

At the border: what to expect

A visa lets you present yourself for entry — it does not guarantee admission. Entry into Vietnam is decided by immigration officials at the port of entry.

Entry requirements

  • Valid passport with your eVisa or VOA documents.
  • Return or onward travel ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation and itinerary.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.

Conditions of stay

  • Stay length is set by the officer at entry — it can be less than your visa's maximum.
  • A tourist visa is not a work permit — no employment.
  • No full-time study on a tourist visa.
  • Depart before your permitted stay ends; overstaying is an immigration violation.
Before you apply

Common reasons a Vietnam visa is refused

Knowing these before you apply reduces your risk.

  • Passport validity under 6 months

your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

  • Poor quality passport scan

blurry, dark, or cropped scans. Use a proper scanner.

  • Photo not meeting specifications

wrong size, wrong background color, or glasses worn. Follow the 4×6 cm white background spec exactly.

  • Incorrect entry port

you must enter through the port specified on your application. If you specified a land border but arrive at an airport, you may be denied entry.

  • Name mismatch

the name on the application must match your passport exactly — spelling, order, and spacing.
